Acupuncture for Neck and Shoulder Pain in Eindhoven

Neck and shoulder pain is one of the most common problems I see in my acupuncture clinic in Eindhoven.

Many people come because their neck feels stiff, their shoulders are tight, or they experience headaches that seem to start from the neck.

Often, the pain does not appear suddenly. Instead, it develops gradually due to daily habits such as working at a computer, looking at a phone, or dealing with long-term stress.

Acupuncture therapy can be a very effective way to release this tension and restore balance in the body.

Why does neck and shoulder pain develop?

Most neck and shoulder pain is related to posture, stress, and muscle imbalance.

When we sit for long hours or keep the head leaning forward, some muscles work too much while others become weaker. Over time, this creates tension and restricted movement.

The muscles most commonly involved include:

Upper trapezius
This muscle connects the neck and shoulder. When it becomes tight, it creates the typical feeling of raised shoulders and can lead to tension headaches.

Levator scapulae
This muscle connects the neck to the shoulder blade. When it becomes tense, turning the head can be painful, and the neck may feel stiff.

Sternocleidomastoid (SCM)
This muscle runs along the side of the neck. Stress and forward head posture often cause it to tighten, which can contribute to headaches, dizziness, or neck tension.

Deep neck stabilizing muscles
These muscles support the neck. When they become weak, the larger muscles compensate and eventually become overworked.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, neck and shoulder pain often occurs when the flow of Qi and blood in the meridians becomes blocked, particularly along the Gallbladder, Small Intestine, and Bladder channels that pass through the neck and shoulder area.

How acupuncture helps relieve neck and shoulder tension

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points that help the body relax tight muscles and improve circulation.

During acupuncture treatment for neck and shoulder pain, the goal is to:

• release tight muscle areas
• improve blood circulation
• calm the nervous system
• restore the flow of Qi in the meridians

Many patients notice their neck becoming lighter and more mobile even during the treatment.

Because neck and shoulder tension is a condition I treat very frequently in my clinic, I combine precise acupuncture techniques with gentle manual therapy to release deeper layers of tension.

This approach often helps patients achieve longer-lasting relief.

Why does shoulder and neck tension often returns

One important part of treatment is understanding why the tension developed in the first place.

Common causes include:

• prolonged computer work
• forward head posture
• emotional stress
• poor sleeping position
• lack of movement during the day

If these patterns remain unchanged, the muscles may gradually become tight again.

How to maintain the results after acupuncture

After releasing the tension with acupuncture therapy, I usually recommend a few simple strategies to maintain the results:

Posture awareness
Keeping the head balanced above the shoulders rather than leaning forward.

Regular movement
Short breaks during desk work help prevent muscles from becoming overloaded.

Gentle stretching
Simple stretches for the neck and shoulders can help maintain flexibility.

Stress regulation
When the nervous system is calmer, muscles naturally hold less tension.

These small changes can significantly reduce the chance of neck and shoulder pain returning.
